26/7/2021

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, MONDAY, 26/07/2021 – Brunei Religious Officers Student Association (BruROSA) and Brunei Students Union (BSUnion) have conducted an unprecedented forum on Fostering Brunei’s Cultural Diversity held at Dewan Silaturrahim, Pusat Belia. This forum was open to the public members, BSUnion members and members of other Bruneian student associations.
As we’re living in a multicultural and diverse society, there are certain principles and values that we need to hold on to ensure a peaceful and harmonious way of living. Values and principles such as inclusivity, respect, kindness, and open-mindedness are pertinent in creating a healthy environment and welcoming society. Hence, our team has conducted this forum to initiate conversations that revolve around tackling diversity, respecting people of different cultural backgrounds and understanding the meaning of identity-stressing more on how this can foster cultural diversity.

The forum started with an opening prayer recited by Izz Khan, a member of the Entrepreneur Team, followed by a welcoming remark presented by the President of BruROSA, Fikri Ali. Four invited speakers starred as the focal point of this forum. One of them attended the forum virtually by giving his speech through a pre-recorded video: Micheal Shie (Bruneian graduate from Durham University). The three remaining speakers, on the other hand, attended the forum physically. They are Joshua Belayan (Director of Sponsorship at Asean Youth Advocates Network), Dr Hoon Chang Yau (Associate Professor and Director of CARe at UBD and Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia) and Ustaz Khairul Nazif (Assistant Lecturer of the Usuluddin Faculty at UNISSA). Izz Khan, an undergraduate studying Law with Criminology at the University of Manchester, moderated this forum. At the end of the conference, Izz Khan recited the closing prayer followed by delivery of the closing speech by the President of BSUnion, Ikhwan Hirwana.
